The Ford Mustang is an automobile made by Ford in the United States. It was built on the platform of the second-generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact automobile.
The Mustang established the "pony car" class of American automobiles—sports car-like coupes with long hoods and short rear decks—and spawned competitors such as General Motors' Chevrolet Camaro, AMC's Javelin, and Chrysler's redesigned Plymouth Barracuda.
